Turbo Granny (ターボババア, Tābo Babā) is a well-known yokai who originally resided within a tunnel located in Shono City. Her time there came to an end following a confrontation with Momo Ayase and Okarun. As a result of the encounter, her powers were sealed within Okarun, while her consciousness became trapped inside a stuffed doll. Seeking to regain her abilities, Turbo Granny strikes a deal with Momo: in exchange for helping Okarun recover his kintama, she would have her powers restored.
Within the Dandadan series, Turbo Granny initially serves as the main antagonist during the Turbo Granny Arc but later transitions into a key supporting character as the story progresses.
Appearance
In Anime and Original Manga
The yokai takes the form of an elderly woman with heavily wrinkled, reddish-brown skin that appears aged and weathered. Her long, thick, unkempt white hair cascades down her back, giving her a wild and disheveled appearance. Her eyes are wide and unsettling, with yellow sclera that contrast sharply against her dark pupils, and they remain fixed in a sideways gaze, as if perpetually glancing to the sides. When she possesses her victims, their bodies undergo a transformation, mirroring her own aged and eerie appearance. However, one distinct difference is the emergence of an abnormally large mouth filled with sharp, jagged teeth capable of tearing through flesh and severing body parts with ease.
After her consciousness is forcibly removed from Okarun, Turbo Granny is left with no choice but to take up residence inside the body of a maneki-neko doll, a traditional Japanese figurine often associated with good fortune, though now serving as an unusual vessel for the yokai’s trapped spirit.

Personality
Turbo Granny is a yokai known for her cruel and sadistic nature, as well as her extremely foul-mouthed and vulgar behavior. Her crude tendencies are evident when she offers Okarun the chance to suckle on her breasts in exchange for consuming his family jewels. With her exceptional running speed, Turbo Granny takes great pride in her athletic abilities and refuses to let anyone underestimate her. When her skills are challenged, she is not above using deceit to gain the upper hand. This is evident during her game of tag with Okarun and Momo, where she manipulates the countdown by skipping and altering numbers to gain an advantage.
Despite her harsh demeanor, Turbo Granny also possesses a compassionate side. As Seiko reveals, she often seeks out the spirits of young girls who have died tragically, offering them comfort and solace in their final moments. This compassionate nature is the reason she ultimately fused with the Earthbound Spirit Crab in Shono City, demonstrating a more empathetic aspect beneath her abrasive exterior.
Background
In modern times, Turbo Granny was infamous as a yokai known as the 100 km/h Granny (100キロババア, 100 Kiro Babā), feared for terrorizing people across Japan with her supernatural speed. While roaming the country, she showed a more compassionate side by offering solace to the restless spirits of young girls who had died tragic deaths. Over time, Turbo Granny eventually fused with an earthbound spirit within a tunnel located in Shono City. From that point on, she fiercely guarded her territory, placing a curse on anyone who dared to trespass, often stealing their reproductive organs as punishment.
Abilities and Powers
Spiritual Power
Immense Speed

True to her name, Turbo Granny possesses extraordinary speed, allowing her to sprint at impressive velocities of up to 100 km/h (62.1 mph).
Strengths and Weaknesses
Turbo Granny’s primary strength is her extraordinary speed, which enables her to traverse long distances quickly and efficiently. What makes her abilities particularly impressive is her capacity to sustain a consistent running pace even when navigating sharp turns or winding paths. This agility allows her to maintain momentum without slowing down, providing her with a distinct advantage over vehicles that rely on straight tracks or roads. According to Turbo Granny herself, this skill makes her capable of outrunning even high-speed trains traveling at 120 km/h (74.6 mph), solidifying her reputation as one of the fastest beings of her kind.
Usage
According to her urban legend, Turbo Granny uses her remarkable speed to pursue and capture anyone who dares to run from her. No matter how fast her targets may be, they stand little chance of escaping her relentless chase. Once she successfully catches her victim, she wastes no time in placing her curse upon them, ensuring that they suffer the consequences of crossing her path.
Phone Teleportation

Turbo Granny possesses the unique ability to teleport through phone lines, a skill made possible by combining her incredible speed with her knowledge of the world’s natural spirals. Specifically, she harnesses the spiral-shaped magnetic fields that form around electrical currents, allowing her to travel instantly from one location to another by riding these invisible pathways. This mastery of both speed and electromagnetic spirals enables her to bypass physical barriers and cover vast distances in an instant, making her an even more formidable presence.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The main advantage of this ability is that Turbo Granny can instantly teleport to any location equipped with a telephone. By utilizing phone lines as a conduit, she can bypass physical obstacles and cover vast distances in the blink of an eye, making her presence unpredictable and allowing her to appear anywhere a phone is available.
Usage
Turbo Granny utilized this ability to teleport directly into the Serpos’ spaceship by traveling through Momo’s mobile phone. At the time, she was inhabiting Okarun’s body, allowing her to bypass the spaceship’s defenses and appear inside undetected, demonstrating both the versatility and strategic potential of her teleportation powers.
Spiritual Form

Turbo Granny possesses the ability to dissolve her physical body, transforming herself into a spiritual form. This state allows her to transcend the limitations of her corporeal form, granting her increased mobility and the capacity to move through solid objects and barriers undetected.
Strengths and Weaknesses

The primary strength of Turbo Granny’s spiritual form lies in her ability to possess the bodies of her targets, granting her full control over their actions and movements. Even while inhabiting another being, she retains access to her other abilities, most notably her incredible speed, which remains undiminished. Her possession abilities are not limited to humans; she can also take control of spirits. This is evident when she possessed the body of the Earthbound Spirit Crab, using it as a host to engage Momo in a game of cat-and-mouse, showcasing both her versatility and strategic cunning.
Usage
Turbo Granny utilized her spiritual form to possess Okarun after struggling to detach him from her breast. By shifting into this intangible state, she was able to take control of his body, overcoming the physical limitation. Later, she once again assumed her spiritual form to seize control of the Earthbound Spirit Crab’s body, using it as a vessel to bring her confrontation with Momo to an end, demonstrating her adaptability and resourcefulness in combat.
Curse

Turbo Granny possesses the ability to curse anyone who dares to flee from her presence, inflicting punishment by stealing their genitalia. Her curse takes the form of possession, where the victim’s physical appearance begins to transform, mirroring Turbo Granny’s own grotesque features. Simultaneously, their consciousness is suppressed, allowing the yokai to seize control of their body. Under her influence, the possessed individual goes on a wild rampage, attacking anyone in their path without distinction or restraint, making her curse both physically and mentally devastating.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Turbo Granny’s possession-induced curse grants her the ability to control her victim’s body from a distance, allowing her to manipulate their actions while her physical body remains elsewhere. Similar to her direct possession through her spiritual form, this form of remote control does not limit her powers. Her signature immense speed remains fully accessible, enabling the possessed individual to move with the same rapid agility that defines Turbo Granny herself, making her an even more dangerous and unpredictable threat.

When not focused on attacking others, Turbo Granny can use her possessed victims as intermediaries to communicate remotely from her main body. Her physical form resides within a pocket dimension where time passes only for her and the person she chooses to interact with, allowing for undisturbed conversations across distances. Additionally, Turbo Granny’s curse is contagious, posing a threat to anyone who merely sees the possessed individual. Those exposed to the curse may suffer severe physical effects, including heart attacks, strokes, or spontaneous bleeding from the nose and ears, further amplifying the danger her presence represents.
Breaking the curse requires one of two methods: either the afflicted individual must recover their stolen genitalia, or Turbo Granny herself must be subjected to an exorcism, severing her connection to the victim and lifting the curse’s effects.
Usage
According to her urban legend, Turbo Granny places a curse on anyone who attempts to escape her within the Earthbound Spirit Crab’s tunnel. Using her incredible speed, she quickly catches those who try to flee, ensuring that her victims cannot outrun her before she inflicts her supernatural punishment.
Fusion

Turbo Granny possesses the ability to fuse with any spirit that willingly accepts the union. This merging allows her to combine her powers with those of the spirit, enhancing her abilities and creating a more formidable entity.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The primary advantage of Turbo Granny’s ability to fuse with spirits is that it grants her full access to their unique abilities, which she can wield however she pleases. The extent of her power depends on the nature of the spirit she merges with, allowing her to adapt to various situations. By combining her own formidable speed and skills with the strengths of her spiritual counterparts, Turbo Granny can transform into an even more fearsome and unpredictable yokai, making her a formidable force against both humans and other supernatural beings.
Usage
Turbo Granny fused with the Earthbound Spirit Crab within the tunnel of Shono City, driven by her desire to provide solace to the spirits of young girls who had met tragic ends in the area. Through this fusion, she gained access to the crab’s unique abilities, which extended her influence and control over the city of Shono, further amplifying her presence and supernatural power within the region.
Other Abilities
Luck Inducement
Having taken residence inside a maneki-neko doll, Turbo Granny asserts that she has absorbed the charm’s legendary power, which is widely believed to bring good luck and prosperity. As a result, she now possesses the ability to bestow good fortune upon others, blending her supernatural nature with the doll’s traditional association with luck and blessings.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Merely by being near others, Turbo Granny can impart a stroke of luck that overrides any misfortune they might face at that moment. This effect becomes especially advantageous during confrontational situations, where those blessed with her luck gain the upper hand, while their opponents simultaneously experience a streak of bad luck, tipping the odds in favor of Turbo Granny’s side.
Despite the benefits of this ability, Turbo Granny has no control over whom her luck affects. The phenomenon occurs randomly, without any intentional direction on her part. Additionally, the power is indiscriminate, meaning that there is no guarantee that Turbo Granny or her allies will always be the recipients of good fortune. In some cases, her luck can unpredictably favor her adversaries, making the ability as much a gamble as it is an advantage.
Usage
Turbo Granny’s ability to bestow luck typically activates whenever she is accompanying the Family and they find themselves in dangerous situations. During these moments, her presence often tilts the odds in their favor, helping them overcome threats and unforeseen challenges through sudden strokes of good fortune.
Former Abilities and Powers
Earthbound Spirit Crab Fusion
Territory Control

While merged with the Earthbound Spirit Crab of Shono City, Turbo Granny gained control over the territory where the spirit resided. This fusion granted her influence and authority within the area, enhancing her presence and allowing her to manipulate the environment to her advantage.
Strengths and Weaknesses

With this ability, Turbo Granny could manipulate the environment within any part of Shono City, with the Earthbound Spirit Crab’s tunnel serving as her primary domain. Her control extended to summoning multiple hands from the ground, capable of grabbing and restraining her targets to prevent their escape. Additionally, the fusion enabled Turbo Granny and the Earthbound Spirit Crab to communicate with the spirits inhabiting the vast cemetery located on the outskirts of Shono City. By doing so, they could enlist the spirits’ assistance, allowing them to possess the bodies of local residents to further strengthen their influence.
This power made Turbo Granny and the Earthbound Spirit Crab nearly unstoppable as long as their targets remained within the boundaries of Shono City. However, the ability was geographically limited, meaning that once their enemies left the city’s borders, Turbo Granny and the Earthbound Spirit Crab lost their territorial advantage and could no longer exert control over them.
Usage
Turbo Granny employed this ability to trap anyone who dared to enter the tunnel she shared with the Earthbound Spirit Crab, preventing them from escaping. Within the tunnel, she altered her form, transforming into massive replicas of her own head, each with eyes replaced by rows of sharp teeth. These colossal heads appeared at both the entrance and exit, effectively cornering intruders and leaving them with no way out. In the anime adaptation, she further enhanced this tactic by extending the length of the tunnel, making the exit seem unreachable no matter how far her targets ran.
Outside the tunnel, Turbo Granny and the Earthbound Spirit Crab expanded their influence by summoning the spirits from the large cemetery situated at the outskirts of Shono City. These spirits were then commanded to possess the bodies of the city’s residents, creating an army of unwilling hosts. Together, they staged an ambush against their fleeing enemies, using their overwhelming numbers to surround and overpower anyone attempting to escape their territory.
Urban Legend
Turbo Granny is a well-known modern urban legend that circulates throughout Japan, with sightings and stories reported in various locations across the country. While her actions and behavior may differ from one account to another, the defining characteristic that remains consistent is her incredible speed, which rivals or surpasses that of a car. In most versions of the legend, the figure is depicted as an elderly woman, though some variations present different appearances, adding to the mystery and intrigue surrounding this supernatural entity.
Trivia
- Turbo Granny is likely inspired by the ancient Japanese practice of ubasute, a mythical custom in which elderly women were abandoned in remote, desolate locations by their families during times of hardship to reduce the number of mouths to feed. Although there is little evidence that ubasute was widely practiced, it has become a recurring theme in Japanese folklore and storytelling. This connection may help explain Turbo Granny’s frequent displays of anger toward Momo and Okarun, as well as her constant complaints about the younger generation’s lack of respect for the elderly, reflecting the resentment and sorrow associated with the legend of ubasute.
