Evil Eye | Dandadan Wiki (English)

The Evil Eye (邪視, Jashi) is a yokai that had been confined for years within the Tsuchinoko sacrificial house, where its dark presence lingered in isolation. After possessing Jiji, the Evil Eye became driven by a singular goal: to eliminate any human that crossed its path, fueled by an intense hatred toward humanity. However, its relentless pursuit of destruction took an unexpected turn after a series of confrontations with Okarun. Through their exchange of fights, a mutual understanding began to form between the two. Ultimately, the Evil Eye agreed to a deal with Okarun, promising to focus its aggression solely on him, thereby significantly reducing the threat it posed to others, including the main cast.

Within the Dandadan series, the Evil Eye initially serves as one of the primary antagonists during the Cursed House Arc and later assumes the role of the main antagonist in the Evil Eye Arc. Despite its antagonistic beginnings, the Evil Eye has since transitioned into a major supporting character, playing an increasingly complex role as the series progresses.

Appearance

In Anime and Original Manga

The Evil Eye is a tall, lanky male figure with a distinctive bowl haircut, vertically aligned eyes, and a sinister grin that seems permanently etched on his face. His attire is minimal, as he wears nothing but underwear, adding to his unsettling presence. In his spiritual form, the Evil Eye retains the same general appearance he had when he was alive, though his spectral body appears healthier and more robust. His current form is the result of a tragic event involving a young boy who was sacrificed by the Kito family. Unable to save the child, the Evil Eye became consumed by grief and rage. As a manifestation of his sorrow and fury, he absorbed the boy’s physical characteristics, which ultimately shaped the appearance he now possesses. This fusion of his original form and the boy’s likeness serves as a haunting reminder of the tragedy that fueled his transformation into a vengeful spirit.

During his time as a human, the Evil Eye was a frail and emaciated child, a result of prolonged neglect and deprivation of food and water at the hands of his captors. His thin frame reflected the harsh conditions he endured, while his short hair and tattered, dirty robe further highlighted the suffering he experienced. When the Kito Family prepared him for sacrifice, he was stripped of his ragged clothing and dressed solely in a fundoshi, a traditional Japanese undergarment. This minimal attire marked the final stage of his tragic life, symbolizing both his vulnerability and the cruel fate that ultimately led to his transformation into a vengeful spirit.

When possessing Jiji’s body, the Evil Eye induces several physical transformations that alter the young man’s appearance. His hair turns stark white, while a third eye with a distinct ripple-like pattern emerges at the center of his forehead. Additionally, Jiji’s natural eye color shifts to a striking yellow, and dark markings extend down his shoulders, framing his face with an ominous design. The possession also affects Jiji’s accessories, notably causing his earrings to elongate, further enhancing his altered appearance. Initially, the Evil Eye’s presence disrupted Jiji’s clothing, resulting in the destruction of all his garments, leaving him clad only in his underwear. However, this phenomenon ceased after the Evil Eye handed his briefs to Okarun, marking the end of the wardrobe-related side effects of the possession.

Personality

During his life, the Evil Eye was a hopeful and compassionate child who longed for the simple joys of companionship. From his prison, he would gaze out the window, wishing he could join the children he saw playing outside. Despite his own suffering, he displayed deep empathy, as shown by his desperate attempt to save a young boy who was destined to be sacrificed—just as he had been long ago. However, his failure to rescue the child marked a turning point in his life, leaving a profound scar on his heart. The grief and frustration of this loss consumed him, gradually twisting his once-kind nature into something darker. In death, the boy’s sorrow and anger transformed him into a vengeful spirit fueled by resentment, driving him to seek vengeance by targeting every human who crossed his path. This shift from innocence to bitterness became the defining force behind the Evil Eye’s relentless pursuit of destruction.

After seizing control of Jiji’s body, the Evil Eye gains the freedom to act on his darkest impulses, revealing himself to be a ruthless, aggressive, and sadistic entity with a deep-seated hatred for humanity. His violent nature extends not only to humans but also to anyone or anything that dares to stand in his way. The thrill of combat excites him, especially when facing opponents capable of matching his strength. In these encounters, he takes his adversaries seriously, holding nothing back and using his full strength to overpower them. However, he harbors disdain for those who attempt to flee from battle, viewing retreat as an act of cowardice. As a yokai, the Evil Eye holds a strong sense of pride in his supernatural identity and believes that it is beneath his kind to associate with humans. This belief is evident in his reaction upon seeing Turbo Granny accompanying Momo; he misinterprets their relationship, assuming that Turbo Granny is Momo’s servant and expressing contempt for her association with a human. Similarly, when he first encounters Okarun in his transformed state, the Evil Eye mistakes him for another yokai and shows disdain for Okarun’s decision to defend Momo, considering it a betrayal of their kind. These views highlight the Evil Eye’s deep-seated prejudice against humanity and his belief that yokai should remain separate from those he seeks to punish.

After the Evil Eye becomes confined within Jiji, Okarun offers a new perspective on the yokai’s behavior, suggesting that the Evil Eye is much like a newborn child driven by a simple desire to play and have fun—an echo of his final wish as a human, when he longed to join the children he watched from his prison window. However, this innocent desire became warped by the trauma of his victimization at the hands of humanity’s darker side. As a result, the Evil Eye developed a distorted understanding of what it means to play, equating the act of killing humans with a form of entertainment. His inability to distinguish between right and wrong stems from this misunderstanding, giving him a personality that is both childlike and morally unaware. This immaturity becomes evident when the Evil Eye attends Jiji’s school for the first time, with Momo acting as his chaperone. In the classroom, he behaves loudly and impulsively, struggling to adhere to social norms. His lack of etiquette is further displayed during lunch, where he disregards Momo’s instructions to use chopsticks, instead preferring to eat with his hands. Beyond his playful nature, the Evil Eye also exhibits a lack of patience, as shown when he eagerly begged Okarun to resume their second battle after the latter paused his transformation, revealing the yokai’s restless energy and desire for constant engagement.

Background

When he was alive, the Evil Eye was a young boy selected by the Kito Family to be sacrificed to the Tsuchinoko, a ritual intended to prevent the volcanic eruption that threatened to destroy his village. Imprisoned and subjected to severe malnourishment, his frail body grew weaker as time passed. Despite the harsh conditions he endured, the boy found a glimmer of hope while gazing through the bars of his cage, where he could see children playing joyfully outside. Longing to experience the same happiness, he wished with all his heart to join them—even if only once. This simple yet profound desire remained with him until the moment of his death, becoming the final thought that lingered in his heart as his life came to an end.

Many years after his sacrifice, the boy reappeared in the living world as a spirit, bound to the very place where he had been imprisoned. By this time, the location had been rebuilt by the Kito Family into a sacrificial house used to continue their rituals. One evening, as the family living there sat down for dinner, the boy’s spirit manifested before their son, startling the child with his sudden appearance. Hoping to ease the boy’s fear and interact with him, the spirit began to dance, attempting to establish a connection despite his ghostly form. However, tragedy struck when the son was chosen as the next sacrifice by the Kito Family. After the child’s parents took their own lives by hanging themselves, the spirit, remembering his own suffering, desperately tried to free the boy from captivity. Yet, his incorporeal form prevented him from physically intervening, leaving him powerless to save the child from sharing his fate. Overcome with rage at witnessing another innocent life condemned to the same cruel destiny he had endured, the spirit’s sorrow and fury transformed into a thirst for vengeance. Fueled by this intense hatred, the boy’s spirit evolved into the entity known as the Evil Eye—an ominous and malevolent force that cursed those he encountered, driving them to commit suicide. As the Kito Family continued their sacrifices over the years, the Evil Eye’s resentment began to grow beyond just the family, expanding into a deep-seated loathing for humanity as a whole. Consumed by this hatred, he resolved to wipe out all humans, seeking to eradicate their existence from the face of the Earth.

Abilities and Powers

Yokai Abilities

Curse

The Evil Eye possesses the supernatural ability to curse individuals by locking them in its malevolent gaze. This curse compels its victims to take their own lives, making it a feared and dangerous entity whose presence alone can lead to fatal consequences.

Memory Sharing

In addition to inflicting curses, the Evil Eye can also share its memories with others through direct eye contact. By establishing this visual connection, it can project vivid recollections from its past into the minds of those who meet its gaze, as demonstrated when it revealed its tragic history to Jiji.

Possession

As a yokai, the Evil Eye has the power to possess human beings, using their bodies as vessels to interact with the physical world. Through possession, it gains full control over its host, allowing it to act on its desires and unleash its abilities while concealed within a human form.

Jiji’s Body

Physical Prowess

Enhanced Strength: Augmented by Jiji’s naturally athletic physique, the Evil Eye possesses immense physical strength, allowing him to shatter solid surfaces and propel full-grown adults through the air with nothing but his bare hands and legs. His strength is further demonstrated by his ability to launch his grudge balls with such velocity that they can pierce the Tsuchinoko’s tough hide. During his confrontation with Momo, Manjiro, and Naki, the Evil Eye exhibited enough force to break Naki’s arm with a single dropkick. His destructive capabilities were further showcased during his battle with Okarun when he completely obliterated the Ta Komeshi exosuit with a single punch, reducing the advanced armor to rubble. Following this, he proceeded to swiftly decimate a group of aliens using his raw strength alone.

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: The Evil Eye demonstrates remarkable speed, agility, and reflexes, capable of keeping pace with Okarun even when the latter is using Turbo Granny’s speed, which allows him to reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. Turbo Granny’s rhythm analysis revealed that the Evil Eye is capable of performing four different actions in the time it takes for Okarun to jump and land once, highlighting his extraordinary swiftness and reaction time. When confronting the Kito Family, the Evil Eye executed a single rush attack that instantly incapacitated four of the five family members present, as well as Manjiro, showcasing both his speed and precision. Additionally, he demonstrated his agility by evading a barrage of swings from Seiko’s bat, reacting quickly enough to leap out of the way when a swift strike targeted his supporting leg.

Enhanced Durability: Possessing Jiji’s body grants the Evil Eye remarkable durability, allowing him to withstand significant physical punishment without lasting damage. Although he was knocked out during his first fight with Okarun, he managed to recover within minutes and swiftly made his way from the Tsuchinoko’s pit to confront Momo, the Kito Family, and Manjiro. His resilience was further demonstrated when he took a surprise kick to the face from Manjiro without flinching, retaliating immediately without any signs of discomfort. Additionally, he endured several powerful strikes from Seiko’s bat, which was swung with enough force to create craters in the ground. Most notably, the Evil Eye was able to withstand attacks from both Naki and Mr. Shrimp—combatants whose strength is great enough to demolish walls and send their opponents flying through the air—further solidifying his reputation as a nearly unstoppable force.

Skill Set

Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combatant: The Evil Eye is an exceptionally formidable fighter, possessing advanced combat skills that allow him to hold his own against powerful adversaries, even when faced with multiple opponents simultaneously. His proficiency in close-quarters combat, combined with his speed, strength, and reflexes, makes him a dangerous and resilient opponent capable of adapting to various fighting styles and overcoming overwhelming odds.

Possession Abilities

Grudge Construction

After taking possession of Jiji and harnessing his immense spiritual power, the Evil Eye acquires the ability to summon the lingering grudges of those sacrificed by the Kito Family. These accumulated negative emotions manifest as tangible energy, which the Evil Eye can shape and mold into various forms according to his will. Once materialized, these constructs become solid and highly resilient, capable of interacting with and affecting objects and individuals in the physical world. This ability not only enhances the Evil Eye’s offensive capabilities but also allows him to adapt to different combat situations by creating versatile weapons and barriers from the collective anguish of the sacrificed souls.

Cursed House (呪いの家 Noroi no ie)

The Evil Eye can utilize the grudges he summons to create a protective dome shaped like a house, serving as a barrier against external attacks. This defensive structure is both solid and resilient, capable of withstanding powerful strikes while safeguarding the Evil Eye within. Referring to this construct as his Cursed House (呪いの家, Noroi no ie), the Evil Eye uses it as both a shield and a symbol of his connection to the sacrifices that fuel his power.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Serving primarily as a defensive barrier, the Cursed House provides the Evil Eye with a formidable means of protection. Its size can be adjusted at will, allowing him to expand or contract the structure to accommodate additional individuals if he chooses to trap them inside. Furthermore, the Evil Eye has the ability to imprison his opponents remotely by directing the summoned grudges toward them, ensnaring them within the confines of the house. Once formed, he can phase through the walls to enter or exit the structure as needed. According to the Evil Eye, the Cursed House is designed to be both impenetrable and inescapable, thanks to the grudges that form its walls, which repel and reject anything that attempts to breach them. This effect was demonstrated when Seiko’s hand was burned and repelled after she tried to break through the barrier using a talisman. Similarly, Okarun’s attempts to escape using Turbo Granny’s speed and strength proved unsuccessful, reinforcing the house’s reputation as an unbreakable and inescapable prison.

Although the Cursed House is highly durable, it has been shown that immense physical force can break through its defenses. This was demonstrated when Okarun, after building up enough energy for a final attack in his Turbo Granny form, managed to launch the Evil Eye out of the barrier, proving that the structure is not entirely indestructible. This suggests that only individuals possessing strength comparable to that of a yokai—or specifically the Evil Eye himself—are capable of overcoming the house’s resilient walls. However, using the Cursed House to trap both himself and his opponent in close-quarters combat presents a potential risk for the Evil Eye. If his opponent is able to predict or react to his attacks, they can exploit an opening and counterattack, turning the confined space to their advantage. This vulnerability makes the barrier a double-edged sword, offering both protection and the possibility of entrapment.

Usage

The Evil Eye utilizes his Cursed House for two primary purposes: as a defensive shield to block external attacks and as a means to imprison his opponents. When using it for confinement, the limited space within the house works to his advantage, as it restricts his opponents’ ability to move and evade, allowing him to launch relentless close-range attacks with little resistance. This enclosed environment forces his enemies into a disadvantageous position, making it difficult for them to effectively dodge or counter his strikes. If his target manages to create distance or block his approach within the house, the Evil Eye can manipulate its size to further limit their mobility. By shrinking the house’s dimensions, he can close the gap between himself and his opponent, ensuring they remain within striking range. This tactic was demonstrated during his encounter with Momo when she used her psychic abilities to push him away. In response, the Evil Eye reduced the house’s size, preventing her from escaping and reestablishing his advantage in the confined space.

Grudge Ball

The Evil Eye can condense the summoned grudges into a compact, spherical shape, forming a small ball of concentrated energy. With his immense leg strength, he can then launch this ball with a powerful kick, propelling it at high speeds toward his target, similar to kicking a soccer ball. This technique allows him to deliver long-range attacks with both precision and force, making it a versatile weapon in combat.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The primary advantage of the grudge ball lies in its ability to ricochet off solid surfaces and continuously pursue its target. After striking an opponent—or if the target manages to dodge—the ball automatically redirects itself, locking onto the intended victim for another attack. This homing effect allows the grudge ball to barrage its target from multiple angles, maintaining its speed and momentum until the Evil Eye recalls it. The relentless pursuit of the ball makes it particularly difficult for enemies to engage the Evil Eye in close combat, as they must constantly evade both the ball and his direct attacks. When not in use, the grudge ball hovers beside the Evil Eye, remaining on standby until he decides to deploy it again. Whether the ball’s movements are solely controlled by the Evil Eye or if it possesses some level of autonomous intelligence remains unclear. Notably, the grudge ball can make contact with intangible objects, such as Momo’s psychic hands, demonstrating its ability to affect both physical and non-physical entities. Additionally, the Evil Eye can generate multiple grudge balls simultaneously by striking the initial ball with a single punch, causing it to split into several smaller projectiles. With multiple balls ricocheting around the area, opponents are forced to defend against a constant barrage from all directions while still contending with the Evil Eye’s direct assaults, making it increasingly difficult to evade or counter his attacks.

Currently, the only known methods to counter the Evil Eye’s grudge ball involve either halting its launch or evading its relentless pursuit. To prevent the ball from being launched, an opponent must possess physical strength equal to or greater than the Evil Eye’s, allowing them to intercept and stop the ball before it is propelled. Alternatively, once the ball is in flight, evasion becomes the primary defense. An opponent with exceptional speed and reflexes can continuously dodge the grudge ball’s attacks, avoiding its ricocheting strikes and maintaining enough agility to evade its homing capabilities until it loses momentum or the Evil Eye recalls it.

Usage

The Evil Eye primarily utilizes the grudge ball as an offensive weapon to complement his close-quarters combat. During battle, he keeps the grudge ball in constant motion, allowing it to bounce around the battlefield while relentlessly locking onto his opponent. This tactic creates a significant challenge for his adversaries, as they must simultaneously defend against the Evil Eye’s direct physical attacks and the unpredictable, ricocheting strikes of the grudge ball. By forcing his opponents to focus on hand-to-hand combat, the Evil Eye exploits their divided attention, making it more difficult for them to anticipate and evade the grudge ball’s homing assaults. This combination of relentless melee attacks and continuous projectile strikes gives the Evil Eye a strategic advantage, overwhelming his enemies from multiple angles.

Trivia

  • The concept of the Evil Eye is rooted in the belief that a malevolent glare, often motivated by envy or ill will, can bring misfortune or harm to its recipient. This belief is prevalent in numerous cultures across regions such as the Mediterranean, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. While some view the Evil Eye as a direct curse that causes injury or bad luck, others interpret it as a supernatural force capable of reflecting harmful intentions back onto those who wish harm upon others—particularly the innocent.
  • In Volume 6 of Dandadan, the Evil Eye’s profile page mentions that his character is associated with two urban legends: the Yamanoke, a mysterious and frightening entity encountered in the mountains, and the Kunekune, a slender, white humanoid figure resembling paper or fabric that is known for its unsettling presence.
  • The Evil Eye’s initial design—depicting a pale, tall, and thin man with a distorted face, elongated arms, and long fingernails—along with his desire to play with children may also reference the entity featured in the music video for Aphex Twin’s Come to Daddy, which portrays a similarly eerie figure interacting with children in an unsettling manner.
  • Another potential inspiration for the Evil Eye is Ochonan, a character from the horror manga Fuan no Tane. Ochonan is a creepy yet benevolent figure who acts as a guardian to multiple generations of his adopted family while choosing to remain hidden from adults. His distinctive vertical eyes and unsettling appearance often disturb adults, though children perceive him as a friendly presence.
  • Additionally, the activation and reversal of the Evil Eye’s curse through exposure to hot or cold substances bear similarities to the conditional curse of Ranma Saotome, the protagonist of the manga and anime series Ranma ½. Ranma is cursed to transform into a female whenever splashed with cold water, while only hot water can restore his male form.
    • This parallel is directly referenced by Jiji in Dandadan when he humorously sings the first few lyrics of “Don’t Make Me Wild Like You”, the first opening theme of Ranma ½, upon discovering the nature of his curse.
  • Finally, the fact that the Evil Eye’s curse can be broken by heat may symbolically connect to the manner of his death during his human life—being burned alive by molten lava during a sacrificial ritual. This connection adds a layer of tragic irony to his character, as the very element that ended his life now serves as the key to breaking the curse he inflicts upon others.
